Festival ring: a region of interaction
The Nicobarese feel pride and satisfaction when celebrating a festive occasion. In different islands, different festivals are celebrated. The Christians, the Muslims, and the traditional Nicobarese live together in Nicobar in complete harmony, devoid of any animosity. They briskly participate in one anotherâs festivals. However, the Kindrak ceremony is supposed to be the most auspicious occasion in the Nicobarese life. On such festive occasions, the Nicobarese sing, drink toddy, and consume enormous amounts of pork, chicken, and other edibles. Drinking toddy and consuming pork are the chief features in festive occasions.
During Kindrak, people go to their friends and relatives of their own village, as well as to other villages and sometimes to their friends in other islands, in order to seek help and cooperation from them to commemorate the death of their ancestors. When they go to invite them, they also give cloths and coconuts to the invitees. And when the invitees come to attend the occasion, they bring enormous articles to the hostâs family to enable them to organize the function. Thus, an interaction takes place between the family-friends and relatives of the same island as well as of other islands. This familyâfriendshipâbond is maintained through generations, which guarantees the solidarity of the Nicobarese society.
